<p><strong>In this unique neurological memoir Siri Hustvedt attempts to solve her own mysterious condition</strong></p><p>While speaking at a memorial event for her father in 2006, Siri Hustvedt suffered a violent seizure from the neck down. Despite her flapping arms and shaking legs, she continued to speak clearly and was able to finish her speech. It was as if she had suddenly become two people: a calm orator and a shuddering wreck. Then the seizures happened again and again. <em>The Shaking Woman</em> tracks Hustvedt’s search for a diagnosis, one that takes her inside the thought processes of several scientific disciplines, each one of which offers a distinct perspective on her paroxysms but no ready solution. In the process, she finds herself entangled in fundamental questions: What is the relationship between brain and mind? How do we remember? What is the self? </p><p>During her investigations, Hustvedt joins a discussion group in which neurologists, psychiatrists, psychoanalysts, and brain scientists trade ideas to develop a new field: neuropsychoanalysis. She volunteers as a writing teacher for psychiatric in-patients at the Payne Whitney clinic in New York City and unearths precedents in medical history that illuminate the origins of and shifts in our theories about the mind-body problem. In <em>The Shaking Woman</em>, Hustvedt synthesizes her experience and research into a compelling mystery: Who is the shaking woman? In the end, the story she tells becomes, in the words of George Makari, author of <em>Revolution in Mind</em>, "a brilliant illumination for us all."</p>

LOWBOY
by John Wray

(9780312429331, 17 bb )

9780312429331

Early one morning in New York City, Will Heller, a sixteen-year-old paranoid schizophrenic, gets on an uptown B train alone. Will is on a mission to save the world from global warming—to do it, though, he'll need to cool down his own body first. And for that he'll need one willing girl.

Lowboy, John Wray’s third novel, tells the story of Will’s fantastic and terrifying odyssey through the city’s tunnels, back alleys, and streets in search of Emily Wallace, his one great hope, and of Violet Heller’s desperate attempts to locate her son before psychosis claims him completely. She is joined by Ali Lateef, a missing-persons specialist, who gradually comes to discover that more is at stake than the recovery of a runaway teen: Violet—beautiful, enigmatic, and as profoundly at odds with the world as her son—harbors a secret that Lateef will discover at his own peril.

The suspense is expertly maintained, straight through the novel’s dreamlike climactic encounter and heart-wrenching final paragraph. The opening pages recall Salinger’s Holden Caulfield, but the denouement and haunting aftertaste may make the stunned reader whisper 'Dostoevsky.' Yes, it really is that good.”—Kirkus (Starred Review)

“Wray’s captivating third novel drifts between psychological realities while exploring the narrative poetics of schizophrenia... In his previous works, Wray has shown that he’s not a stranger to dark themes, and with this tightly wound novel, he reaches new heights.”                —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

“A breathtaking journey.”—O, The Oprah Magazine

“A fast-paced thriller... a masterpiece of aural description.”—GQ

RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT EAT RIGHT
by Joanna Dolgoff MD

(9781605294841, 25.99 bb )

9781605294841

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions. In fact, today’s generation of kids may be the first to experience shorter life spans than their parents. Leading pediatrician Dr. Joanna Dolgoff's Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right teaches kids how to make healthy choices based on the principles of the traffic light: green light foods are nutritious, yellow light foods are eaten in moderation, and red light foods are occasional treats.

The program, which has a proven 96% success rate, can be tailored to suit any child’s age, gender, and weight goals. Complete with sample menus, recipes, and an index of more than 1,000 color-coded foods, Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right provides a practical solution for one of the biggest health crises facing America’s children.

Reviews for Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right ran in the Cape Breton Post and the Hamilton Spectator.

“The book includes kid-and parent-friendly nutritious but tasty recipes for everything from soup to desserts.”—Hamilton Spectator

Dolgoff was a guest of Good Morning America on February 26th and will make an appearance on Dateline on March 3rd.

JANES FAME
by Claire Harman

(9780805082586, 31 bb )

9780805082586

Mention Jane Austen and you’ll likely incite a slew of fervent opinions from anyone within earshot. Regarded as a brilliant social satirist by scholars, Austen also enjoys the sort of popular affection usually reserved for girl-next-door movie stars, leading to the paradox of an academically revered author who has served as the inspiration for chick lit (The Jane Austen Book Club) and modern blockbusters (Becoming Jane). Almost two hundred years after her death, Austen remains a hot topic, and the current flare in the cultural zeitgeist echoes the continuous revival of her works, from the time of original publication through the twentieth century. In Jane’s Fame, Claire Harman gives us the complete biography—of both the author and her lasting cultural influence—making this essential reading for anyone interested in Austen’s life, works, and remarkably potent fame.

An interview with Claire Harman and a review of Jane’s Fame will be featured in the Globe and Mail on March 6th. Jane’s Fame was included in the Globe and Mail’s 10 Most Promising Reads of 2010.

The March issue of ELLE magazine featured a review of Jane’s Fame.

“Harman conjures a blooming portrait of the brilliant, modest nineteenth-century author who wrote her masterpieces on small, easily concealed sheafs of paper in the busy family sitting room.”

DISCIPLE
by Stephen Coonts

(9780312372835, 31.99 bb )

9780312372835

In this new novel by New York Times bestselling author, Stephen Coonts, Iran is weeks away from acquiring nuclear weapons and has every intention of using them to strike first—only Tommy Carmellini and Jake Grafton can stop a nuclear nightmare.

Returning to the kind of military and espionage story that made Cuba (9780312365769) one of his most successful novels, Coonts weaves an unforgettable tale of men and women at war, with the sort of dramatic military action and undercover technology for which Coonts is known.

The February 28th Ottawa Citizen featured a big piece on Coonts and The Disciple:

“Like all good thrillers, The Disciple is loaded with well-rounded characters and is a good old-fashioned page turner.”

The Disciple received a starred review from Publishers Weekly:

“Hardly a page passes without nerve-stretching tension or flat-out action. One can only hope the U.S. President, the head of the CIA, and the Israeli Prime Minister will have this book on their nightstands for easy reference in case fiction turns to reality, an all-too-real possibility as evidenced by recent headlines.”

AN IRISH COUNTRY GIRL
by Patrick Taylor

(9780765320711, 29.99 bb )

9780765320711

Readers of Patrick Taylor’s books know Mrs. Kinky Kincaid as the unflappable housekeeper who looks after two frequently frazzled doctors in the colourful Irish village of Ballybucklebo, but some forty-odd years before and many miles to the south, the girl who would someday be Kinky Kincaid was Maureen O’Hanlon, a precocious girl on the cusp of womanhood with a head full of dreams and a heart open to romance. As she grows into a young woman, Maureen finds herself torn between love and her fondest aspirations. Encountering both joy and sorrow, Maureen at last finds herself on the road to Ballybucklebo—and the strong and compassionate woman she was always destined to become. An Irish Country Girl is another captivating tale by Patrick Taylor, a true Irish storyteller.

Taylor’s previous books have all done extremely well and have been on the bestseller lists; An Irish Country Girl is sure to follow in their footsteps!

“Quietly, almost surreptitiously, Patrick Taylor has become probably the most popular Irish-Canadian writer of all time.”—Globe and Mail

Taylor will be in Toronto on March 10-11th and in Ottawa on March 12th. Stay tuned for more details!
